TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – NC State volleyball battled No. 17 Florida State to extra play in a sensational first set, but ultimately fell 3-0 on Friday, Oct. 23. The loss moves the Wolfpack to 7-17 (0-9 ACC), while the Seminoles improved to 18-2 (9-1 ACC).
Lisa Kretchman led the Pack with 14 kills, while Margaret Salata hit .471 with eight kills and no attack errors. Alex Smith lifted 31 set assists and roped in nine digs.
“We played very hard and came close in set one,” said head coach Charita J. Stubbs. “We did well as a team. I’m very happy about how we played and battled.”
The Pack took the No. 17 country in the land to the brink in a thrilling first set before the Seminoles peeled out with a 32-30 victory as NC State landed 14 kills and out-hit FSU .344 to .333. The Seminoles led 18-14 before a Rachael Morgan attack error knotted the score at 24-all. Both teams then continued to exchange points back-and-forth until the scoreboard locked on 30-30, and FSU followed by landing consecutive scores to take the opening tally.
The Pack’s offense mounted 12 kills in the second stanza, but that was offset by nine attack errors as the Seminoles picked up a 25-17 win. Florida State’s offense then kicked into high gear in the third and final set, hitting .652 with 15 kills and no attack errors. The Pack dropped 15 kills of its own – including four each from both Kretchman and Kelly Wood – but FSU won out 25-18.
NC State will take on Miami in Coral Gables, Fla., on Sunday, Oct. 25 at 1:30 p.m.
