Wrestling Opens ACC Season Wednesday Vs. Duke

RALEIGH, N.C. The NC State wrestling team will begin the Atlantic Coast Conference portion of its dual-match schedule Wednesday evening at Reynolds Coliseum. The bout will begin at 7:30. Admission is free.
The Wolfpack (3-5), coming off a 31-6 loss Sunday at Hofstra, has won 11 straight over the Blue Devils (2-0) since a 26-15 loss at the end of the 1996-97 season. The Pack upended Duke 27-10 in Durham a year ago.
The Killer C’s, Joe Caramanica and Darrion Caldwell, are the pacesetters for NC State. Caramanica, a senior 141-pounder, is 8-0 this season after beginning the year on the shelf with a knee injury. He is ranked No. 12 nationally, and has not allowed a point in his last three matches.
Caldwell, a junior 149-pounder, is following up his All-America sophomore campaign with what so far has been the best season by an NC State wrestler in 16 years. Caldwell, ranked No. 3 nationally, is 23-0 with 10 pins.
Over the last two seasons, Caldwell and Caramanica are a combined 97-11 with 25 pins.
Following the Killer C’s, senior 157-pounder Kody Hamrah is 18-6 with five pins. Freshman 174-pounder Jake Burge has won six of his last nine matches and enters action against Duke with a 10-6 mark. Sophomore 133-pounder Darrius Little is 10-9 with four of his nine losses coming against ranked opponents. Only Caldwell has faced more ranked opponents for the Wolfpack. Caldwell is 6-0 against ranked opponents in 2008-09, 13-4 over the last two years, and 17-6 for his career.
Junior 184-pounder John Barone leads Duke. Barone, 25-5 for the season, set the Duke school record for wins in a season a year ago when he went 35-8. Duke heavyweight Konrad Dudziak, a junior, is 24-2, and freshman 125-pounder Peter Terrezza is 17-12.
