DURHAM, N.C. No. 16 Harvard scored three-second half goals and defeated NC State 3-1 Sunday afternoon in the Duke/adidas Classic at Durham. After a scoreless first half, the Crimson (1-1) scored three goals in a span of under eight minutes, and the Wolfpack (0-2-1) tallied with a score in the 70th minute but it was not enough.
The two teams were deadlocked after the first 45 minutes, with the Pack holding an 8-3 advantage in shots going into the lockerroom at half.
Harvard would then convert on three straight shots in a span of under eight minutes. The Crimson’s first goal came in the 58th minute, when John Stamatis played a through ball into the box, which found the foot of Michael Fucito for the game’s first score.
The same combo of Stamatis to Fucito would score the eventual game winner in the 60th minute, with another pass into the Pack PK box. Harvard’s final score of the game was an unassisted goal by Brian Grimm in the 66th minute.
The Pack would avoid the shutout in the 70th minute. Freshman Watt Williams collected a loose ball about 25 yards out and slotted the ball over to the left wing to junior Ronnie Bouemboue. Bouemboue took the ball inside with a quick touch and netted his first score of the season at the 69:25 mark.
On the game, the Wolfpack out shot Harvard 20-7, including a 6-3 in shots on goal. But Harvard converted all three of its shots on goal into scores, while the Pack tallied just one.
Bouemboue and Alan Sanchez were named to the all-tournament team.
The Pack will return to action this weekend, when NC State opens ACC play with a trip to North Carolina on Friday at 7:00 p.m.
