Volleyball Outlasts Air Force, 3-2

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. NC State ended its stay at the Air Force Academy Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 6, with its second-straight win, a thrilling 3-2 decision over hosting Air Force. The win pushes the Pack to 2-6 on the year, while the Falcons fall to 1-6.
Arlee Tamietti’s 18 kills did the brunt of State’s damage, while Jana Angel supplied 10 of her own. Alex Smith put up a season-best 37 assists, and Kelly Wood (18) and Lindsay Benac (11) combined for 29 digs. Margaret Salata landed three service aces, and Angel and Salata each had seven total blocks.
Jasamine Pettie put up 19 kills for Air Force, and Stephanie Sanford recorded 38 assists. Five different Falcons etched double-digits in digs.
Air Force’s match-best .344 hitting percentage allowed for a 18-25 victory in the opening set, but the Falcons offense immediately began to struggle afterward. The Pack led by as many as eight points on two occasions in the second frame, winning handily at 25-16.
NC State’s poorest offense effort, just a .022 hitting percentage, allowed the Falcons to bounce back and claim the third stanza, 23-25, but the Pack wasn’t done. State held on to a four-point lead late in the fourth set, despite a late Air Force run, to eek out a 25-23 win.
The Pack’s best offense effort, a .310 mark, came when it was most needed in the fifth and final go-round. With 10 kills and a lone attack error, the Pack grabbed its second win on the year with 15-11 effort. Allyson Weissberg gave State the lead for good with a kill to move the score to 7-6.
Next weekend, Sept. 12-13, NC State will hit its home court for the first time of the year, hosting the Hilton/RTP NC State Classic at historic Reynolds Coliseum. Norfolk State, UNC Asheville, Western Carolina and William & Mary will all join the Pack in action.
