Volleyball Falls in Four-Setter to Akron

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. Despite taking game two, NC State fell to Akron, 3-1, in its second match of the day at the Air Force Volleyball Tournament on Friday, Sept. 5. The Zips improve to 3-2 with the win, while the Pack slides to 0-6.
Allyson Weissberg led State’s offense with 10 kills, while Alex Smith posted 29 assists and two service aces. Smith (15) and Kelly Wood (14) combined for 29 of the team’s 55 digs.
Brionna Patterson landed 21 of the Zips 51 kills, and Kara Smith put up 46 assists. Jennifer Stewart record 15 digs, and four Akron players scored service aces.
The Pack committed 10 attack errors and just five kills en route to a match-low -.128 hitting percentage in set one, falling 25-11.
The tables turned in the second stanza, as State held the Zips to its own match-low hitting clip (.083) in a 22-25 decision. A Meryl Loop service error gave the Pack the lead for good at 16-17, sparking a run that saw the red and white grab four of five points.
NC State seemed to have turned a corner midway through the third set, leading by as many as eight points. Trailing 10-16, the Zips took the lead with seven consecutive scores, ultimately winning out 25-23.
The Pack clubbed a match-best .212 hitting percentage in the fourth and final game, nailing nine kills. Akron, however, recorded 20, ending play at 25-17.
NC State will wrap up its stay at the Air Force Volleyball Tournament tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 6, with contests against Montana State (3 p.m.) and Air Force (9 p.m.).
