DURHAM, N.C. The NC State men’s soccer team fell to American 3-0 in the first game of the Duke/adidas Classic Friday night at Duke. The Eagles (2-1) notched two-first half goals to bolt to the lead, and then added a third goal in the second half as the Wolfpack (0-1-1) was shutout.
American would strike first in the 30th minute of action. Off a pass from Mike Worden, sub Luis Martinez struck a perfect shot from 28 yards out into the upped left hand corner of the Pack net.
The Eagles would add one more before the half. Martinez would chip the ball into the Pack penalty box and found Karsten Smith at the far post for a goal at the 42:57 mark.
The Pack had a couple of quality scoring chances in the first half of play. Junior Romulo Manzano put a header on net in the 27th minute that was saved at the last second, and junior Alan Sanchez took a strike from 20 yards out that just missed the upper left corner of the net.
Neither team had that many scoring chances in the last 45 minutes, but the Eagles took advantage of one counter attack. Mike Worden took the ball at midfield and dribbled into the NC State PK box where he layed off a pass to Anthony Moy. Moy then was one-on-one with the Pack’s Will Mackvick and rolled a shot into the far corner of the net.
NC State ended the game with a 15-11 advantage in shots, and Mackvick earned four saves in the Pack goal.
The Wolfpack will return to action this Sunday afternoon, as NC State fill face No. 16 Harvard at Duke in a noon contest.
