9/4/2008 12:00:00 AM | Women's Soccer
Game times for the NC State/Residence Inn North Soccer Tournament have changed on Friday due to the impending weather issues expected from Hurricane Hanna.
Game action will now begin Friday at NC State Soccer Stadium with UNC Greensboro and Stetson at 1 p.m. Virginia Commonwealth and the Wolfpack will immediately follow that match at 4 p.m.
As of now Sunday’s schedule will not change. The Pack takes on Stetson at 1 p.m., which is followed by UNCG and VCU at 3:30 p.m.
Parking is available in the parking deck next to Reynolds Coliseum, which is across Cates Avenue from the soccer field.
Last Friday night, NC State improved to a perfect 3-0 on the season with a resounding 5-1 victory over Elon. Senior Lindsay Vera tallied three goals to increase her career total to 21 markers in her four-year career with the Pack.
Sophomores Kara Baldy and Nadia Aboulhosn also found the back of the net against the Phoenix and each player now has two goals to their credit in 2008.
For the season, Vera leads the Wolfpack with seven points (three goals, one assist), followed by Baldy and Aboulhosn with six points apiece.
The Pack has dominated its three opponents by owning a 59-16 shot advantage and a 24-6 corner kick lead.
NC State is hosting its first in-season tournament since 2006 when the Pack posted victories over Georgia State and American.
Scouting the Spartans
UNCG has opened the season 2-2 with a pair of victories over Coastal Carolina (3-2, 2OT) and George Mason (6-1). The Spartans also fell 2-1 in overtime to Utah and 1-0 to No. 10 Duke last time out on Sunday.
Kelly Attayek, Jamie Corti and Nicole Danford lead the club with two goals apiece, while Kristin Player has scored once and handed out two assists.
Barrie Vogel has seen the bulk of the playing time in goal and owns a 1.60 goals-against-average with 13 saves and a 2-2 record.
UNCG is the preseason favorite to capture the Southern Conference title.
How bout the Hatters
Stetson has opened up the season with a pair of shutout losses, including a 3-0 setback to the University of Miami in its first game of the year. That game was moved from a home game on a Friday night to a road game in Coral Gables on Sunday afternoon due to the excessive rain from Tropical Storm Fay.
Tessa Gavilsky has played all 180 minutes and tops the club with six shots, while Katie Bitetto has put four shots towards net in two matches.
Goalkeeper Caitlin Peterson started the Miami game and made six saves, while Andrea Garavaglia got the nod against Hartford and allowed just one goal and made two saves. Garavaglia started all 19 matches last season and posted 69 saves and a 1.60 GAA.
Stetson was selected sixth in the 11-team Atlantic Sun Conference race in 2008 after finishing in that position last year with an 8-10-1 overall record (6-5-0 in the A-Sun).
Sunday’s meeting with NC State will be the first ever match up between the two schools.
Rambling on the Rams
Virginia Commonwealth has also opened up its campaign with two shutout defeats. Last weekend, the Rams fell 1-0 to Richmond and 5-0 to Virginia in a pair of road matches against local rivals.
VCU was tabbed fourth in the 2008 Colonial Athletic Association preseason poll after finishing fourth last year with an 11-8-3 overall mark under the direction of then first-year co-head coaches Tim Sahaydak and Tiffany Roberts Sahaydak.
The Rams lost 1-0 to NC State last season on a Meredith Parrilla goal in the eighth minute. NC State holds a 3-1 advantage in the series and this marks the third straight season the two teams will square off.
