RALEIGH, N.C. NC State picked up its second ACC win in as many chances on Sunday, Sept. 28, downing Maryland, 3-1, at historic Reynolds Coliseum. The win pushes the Pack to 8-9 (2-0 ACC), while the Terrapins fall to 5-10 (1-2 ACC).
State, which took the first and second frames before closing it out in the fourth, out-hit the Terps .228 to .129, posting 61 total kills. Maryland put up only 50.
Arlee Tamietti pounded out a season-best 19 kills, while Aiwane Iboaya added 13. Alex Smith posted 46 assists, and Isis Gardner recorded six total blocks. Showing tremendous defensive effort, five Pack players, Tamietti (19), Lindsay Benac (18), Smith (14), Kelly Wood (14) and Nikki Sweet (12) had double-digit dig totals.
Maddie Lee and Katie Usher both offered 12 kills for Maryland, and Sharon Strizak (25) and Tedi Doucet (15) combined for 40 of the Terp’s 49 assists. Bethany Springer put up 18 digs and Lee and Usher both had five blocks.
Iboaya and Tameitti each drilled four kills in the opening set, leading State to a 25-17 decision. Maryland’s offense struggled, hitting just .022 with nine attack errors and 10 kills.
The Pack’s match-high .387 hitting clip paved the way for a 25-18 win in the second stanza. NC State grabbed the opening four points and never looked back, leading the whole way through. Iboaya dropped six kills, while two players landed service aces.
Maryland’s best statistical effort game in the third set, as the Terps hit .229 en route to downing the Pack 26-28. State actually led and was serving for the win at 24-22, but Maryland’s offense came alive late to force bonus play.
The fourth and final go around didn’t begin on a high note for NC State, with Maryland quickly building a 4-9 advantage. The Pack, however, immediately tied the score and both teams continued to exchange the lead. A Brittany Grove attack error allowed State to knot the score at 24-all, and the Pack followed by grabbing the next two scores for a 26-24 victory.
Next weekend NC State will hit the road for ACC matches at Wake Forest and Duke.
