RALEIGH, N.C. NC State took down Boston College in thrilling fashion, 3-1, to grab its seventh win of the season in its conference opener at historic Reynolds Coliseum. The Pack cruised through the opening frame, before taking the third set and shutting the door on the evening with decisive play in the fourth.
The win moves NC State to 7-9 (1-0 ACC) on the year, while the Eagles fall to 6-8 (0-2 ACC).
Arlee Tamietti (11) and Aiwane Iboaya (10) both put up double-digit kill totals, and Alex Smith hoisted 33 assists. Nikki Sweet (15) and Kelly Wood (15) combined for 30 of the teams 55 digs, while five players landed service aces. In addition to her offensive assault, Iboaya also led the team with seven total blocks.
Taylor Williams landed a team-best nine kills for BC. Brennan Clark had 13 digs.
The Pack grabbed the lead for good early on in the opening set, moving the score to 4-3 on a Smith kill. NC State’s offense sizzled, pounding out 16 kills to just four errors, en route to building a lead as high as 11 points before winning 25-14.
The second set saw seven tied scores and five lead changes, with the Pack ultimately falling 18-25. BC built a 13-8 lead, but five consecutive State scores tied play at 13-all. It didn’t last long however, as a Jordan Meredith kill immediately put the Eagles back on top for the remainder of action.
Sensational defense kept Boston College in check during the third stanza, as the Pack held the Eagles to a match-low .047 hitting clip. NC State came out of the gates on fire, collecting the first seven scores and leading the entire way. The Wolfpack offense clicked on all cylinders, hitting .355 and dropping 11 kills without recording a single attack error, while leading by as many as 11 points before grabbing a 25-17 decision.
BC grabbed the opening score of the fourth and final set, but the Wolfpack countered by collecting the next five points. The Pack then built a lead to as many as four, but three-straight Eagle scores knotted the score at 16-16. Both teams continued to trade blows until a Tamietti kill put State ahead 18-17, and BC was forced to call a timeout following a Margaret Salata strike that pushed the Pack’s lead to 22-19.
With the Pack one point away from grabbing victory, BC cut the lead to two at 24-22, but an errant serve from Brittany Pierpont on the next play sent the crowd of 583 into celebration mode as State collected the conference victory.
NC State will host Maryland on Sunday, Sept. 28 at 1 p.m.
