RALEIGH, N.C. The NC State men’s soccer team dropped its first home game of the season Wednesday night, losing to High Point in overtime, 2-1. After the Panthers (4-3-1) started the scoring off in the 53rd minute, the Pack (1-5-1) responded with a goal in the 58th minute. The two squads would play out the remainder of the half without a goal, and High Point would get the decider with just 59 seconds to go in the first overtime period.
Neither team found the back of the net in the first half, but NC State had two chances that were both saved at the last second by a High Point defender. Chrystel Bakong in the 15th minute and Stanley Mathurin in the 44th minute each put a header passed the keeper, but each shot attempt was saved by the Panthers at the last second.
High Point would start the day’s scoring in the 53rd minute. Matt Tuttle took the ball down the left side of the field and put a cross into the Pack PK box. Chris Shrum was able to get a head onto the ball, and found teammate Hilaire Babou for the goal at the 52:40 mark.
NC State would even things up less than five minutes. After the Pack was awarded a corner kick, Alan Sanchez lofted a ball to the back post where Bakong headed in his first goal of the season at the 57:27 mark.
Neither team would score again in the half, and after 90 minutes the score was knotted up at 1-1.
The winning goal would come with just 59 seconds left in the first 10-minute overtime period. High Point’s Scott Rojo would dribble around the right side of the field until he crossed the ball into the box finding Shrum for the score.
The Pack would outshoot High Point on the day, 19-8.
NC State will return to home action this Saturday night, as the Pack will take on ACC foe #11 Boston College at 7:00 p.m. at the NC State Soccer Stadium.
