GREENVILLE, N.C. NC State quieted a highly partisan crowd at Minges Coliseum on Saturday, Sept. 20, downing East Carolina, 3-2, in five sets. The win moves the Pack to 6-9 on the year, while the Pirates fall to 11-5. The victory caps a two-win weekend for NC State, which has now won four of its last seven contests.
State is now 39-4 all-time against ECU.
“This weekend was a total team effort,” said head coach Charita J. Stubbs. “We had different players stepping up at different times, and everyone playing together as a team. It’s great for the players to get some wins under their belts and build up their confidence as we get ready to head into ACC play.”
Aiwane Iboaya put up a team-best 16 kills, while Allyson Weissberg (13) and Arlee Tamiett (12) added solid contributions. Alex Smith was sensational, pushing up a season-best 53 assists, while Kelly Wood netted 23 digs.
Iboaya was named to the all-tournament team for her efforts over the weekend. In all, the Pack’s lone senior hit .463, amassed 29 kills and had nine total blocks during NC State’s two-day stay in Greenville.
Melissa Zentner lead ECU in kills with 16, and Hannah Fenker recorded 26 assists. Trish Monroe etched 21 digs.
Eleven tied scores and three lead changes highlighted a topsy-turvy opening set, which the Pack took 25-21. Trailing 11-8, ECU scored six straight to move in front. An Isis Gardner kill handed the lead back to State at 22-21, and the Pirates were held scoreless the rest of the way.
East Carolina scored the first four points of the second set and built a nice early lead, but when a Smith kill put the Pack up 9-8, NC State never let go of its advantage. The Pirates came to within one point of tying things up at 22-21, but NC State was able to grab three of the next four scores to end play, 25-22.
Things got a little dicey for the Wolfpack in the third and fourth frames. With the scoreboard locked on 20-all late in the third set, ECU grabbed two quick points to force an NC State timeout before eventually winning out, 25-22. The Pack trailed by as many as eight in the fourth stanza, but eventually cut the Pirates lead to one at 19-20 despite ultimately losing 23-25.
State saved its best offensive effort on the evening for its last set of play, hitting .444 with 11 kills and just three attack errors in a 15-11 fifth-set decision. Trailing 8-9, Iboaya blasted three-straight kills to put the Pack ahead at 11-9 and force an East Carolina timeout. After the break, NC State allowed just two more ECU scores before a Margaret Salata kill handed the Wolfpack its sixth win of the year.
NC State will host two ACC home matches next weekend at historic Reynolds Coliseum, taking on Boston College at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 26, before squaring off against Maryland at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 28.
