GREENVILLE, N.C. Despite taking the opening set, NC State volleyball lost to Marshall, 3-1, on Saturday, Sept. 20 at the East Carolina Invitational in Greenville, N.C. The loss sends the Pack to 5-9 on the year, while the Thundering Herd moves to 6-4.
Aiwane Iboaya and Arlee Tamietti each posted 10 kills for State, while Alex Smith netted 38 assists. Several Pack players put up solid defensive efforts, with Kelly Wood collecting 21 digs and Iboaya netting four blocks.
Kristin Marcum had 19 kills for the Herd, and Elizabeth Flemming etched 54 assists. Megan Carlson picked up 17 digs, while Layne Kehl had three blocks.
State hit a match-high .333 in the opening frame, winning 18-25. Wolfpack players landed 12 kills and committed just two attack errors, while the Herd hit just .100 and failed to establish a consistent offensive assault.
Marshall rebounded immediately however, hitting .429 and landing 16 kills for a 25-15 win in the second stanza.
Both teams stood locked in a 12-all tie midway through the third set, but a Fleming kill put the Herd up for the remainder of play. State kept things close, trailing by two late at 22-20, but Marshall wrapped up three of the final four scores to halt play, 25-21.
NC State quickly built an early advantage out of the gate in the fourth and final set, but the Herd tied the score at 13-all, the first of six tied tallies down the stretch of the frame. The Pack was two points away from forcing a fifth set at 21-23, but back-to-back Marshall scores tied things yet again before a Marcum kill and a Carlson ace shut the door on the match, 25-23.
NC State will take on host East Carolina at 7 p.m.
