Volleyball Heads to Final Tournament

RALEIGH, N.C. NC State volleyball will begin competition at the East Carolina Volleyball Tournament today, Friday, Sept. 19, in Greenville, N.C. The Pack will take on Morgan State at 4 p.m., before battling Marshall (11 a.m.) and host East Carolina (7 p.m.) tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 20.
This weekend will mark State’s last round of non-conference competition before ACC play begins next weekend.
The Pack stands at 4-8 after winning matches over Norfolk State (3-0) and Western Carolina (3-1) at the Hilton/RTP NC State Classic in Raleigh last weekend. Arlee Tamietti leads the team in kills with 122, while Allyson Weissberg has 67. Alex Smith has lifted 309 assists and 10 service aces, while Kelly Wood fronts the roster in digs with 159. Six Wolfpack players post double-digit tallies in total blocks, with Margaret Salata (39) and Aiwane Iboaya (35) leading the way.
East Carolina carries a 9-4 record into the weekend after topping UNC Wilmington, 3-1, this past Wednesday night. The Pirates won its first five matches of the season and have collected decisions in three of its last five bouts. Lizzy Bruin (94) and Amanda Lutzow (92) have led the offense thus far, while Hannah Fenker has 368 assists. Trish Monroe has amassed 209 digs and Bruin has 36 total blocks.
Marshall stands at 5-3 despite dropping two of its previous three contests. The Thundering Herd’s offense has been paced by Elizabeth Fleming’s 307 assists and Emily Sullivan’s 95 kills. Megan Carlson leads the team in both service aces (11) and digs (81), while Jalicia Ross’ 23 total blocks is a team best.
Morgan State (1-12) is in the midst of a three-match losing streak following a 1-3 showing at the Georgetown Classic last weekend. Erin Cox has 77 kills for the Lady Bears, and Christa Rogers posts 170 assists and 13 service aces. Dina Beamon’s 60 digs are a team high, while Rogers and Erica Turnbull both 15 total blocks.
The Pack is a combined 40-4 all-time versus the tournament field, posting a 38-4 record against East Carolina while winning its only two bouts against Marshall. NC State and Morgan State have never met on the hardwood.
NC State will host two ACC home matches next weekend at historic Reynolds Coliseum, taking on Boston College at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 26, before squaring off against Maryland at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 28.
