Volleyball Blanks Morgan State, 3-0

GREENVILLE, N.C. NC State volleyball shut out Morgan State, 3-0, on Friday, Sept. 19 in its first match at the East Carolina Tournament in Greenville, N.C. The win moves the Pack to 5-8 on the year, while the Lady Bears fall to 1-13.
NC State never trailed at any time during the match, despite five tied scores.
Arlee Tamietti led State with 12 kills, while Alex Smith recorded 20 assists. Nikki Sweet picked up six digs, and Jana Angel had three total blocks. Four Wolfpack players landed service aces and NC State hit a solid .375 throughout play.
Erin Cox had team-bests in both kills (9) and digs for Morgan State (9). Christa Rogers pushed up 25 assists and Dina Beamon landed two service aces.
Both teams started slow, offering their poorest offensive showings in the opening set. The Pack capitalized on MSU’s .138 hitting percentage, grabbing a 25-18 decision. NC State led by as many as five points, but its own match-low .292 attack percentage allowed the Lady Bears to stay within striking distance.
The second stanza was all NC State, with the Pack holding the advantage during all of play and leading by as many as 12 points. State wrapped up the frame by taking five of the final six scores to earn a 25-13 decision, thanks in part to match highs in both kills (12) and hitting percentage (.458).
The Pack continued to cruise in the third and final frame, winning 25-21. Morgan State cut NC State’s lead to three at 20-17, but the Pack reeled off three consecutive points to push its lead to six before closing out the evening on a Lisa Kretchman kill.
NC State will battle Marshall (11 a.m.) and host East Carolina (7 p.m.) tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 20.
