HANAHAN, S.C. Julie Saleeby began her golf season in grand fashion with a collegiate best round of three-under 69 to lead NC State into fourth after the first day of the Cougar Classic at Yeaman’s Hall Golf Club.
The second-year player from Raleigh never shot better than 72 during her first season with the Wolfpack last season. Beginning today from No. 10, Saleeby had seven birdies in her round and is tied for third among a field of 112 competitors. She is one shot out of the lead, held by two others.
Senior stalwart Lauren Doughtie is two shots back of her teammate after a one-under round of 71 to tie for 8th place after 18 of 54 holes. A steady round was her recipe today with three birdies, two bogeys and 13 pars.
Freshman Meghan Chapman made a nice debut with the Pack by shooting a three-over 75 and is tied for 39th. After posting bogey on three of her first four holes, the Seminole, Fla., native regained her form and shot even par the rest of the way, featuring two birdies.
Joanna Saleeby also contributed to the Wolfpack’s team score with a four-over 76 and is tied for 54th. Her round began very well with a birdie at No. 10 and made the turn at just one-over. After getting to two-over with a birdie at No. 7, she finished with two bogeys on her round.
Emily Street began her junior year with a six-over 78 and is tied for 76th. She got off to a rocky start with a double bogey at No. 10 and five more bogeys on her front nine, but did come up with two birdies to make the turn five-over. Street’s final nine holes were much better with a birdie at the par-4 fifth hole.
Virginia and Georgia are atop the team leaderboard at even par (288). South Carolina (290) is two shots back in third, followed by NC State (291) and tied for fifth is North Carolina and Florida State at four-over (292).
Second round action continues Monday morning at the par-72, 6,159-yard layout.
