Volleyball Trumps Catamounts, 3-1

RALEIGH, N.C. NC State overcame a sluggish start to down Western Carolina, 3-1, on Saturday, Sept. 13, in its first match on the final day of the Hilton/RTP NC State Classic. The win moves the Pack to 4-7 on the year, while the Catamounts remain winless at 0-8.
State is now 9-0 all-time against WCU.
Three Wolfpack players, Arlee Tamietti (15), Isis Gardner (11) and Allyson Weissberg (10) posted double-digit kill totals, while Alex Smith put up 37 assists. Smith and Tamietti each recorded three service aces. Margaret Salata had four total blocks and Smith, Tamietti and Lindsay Benac each had nine digs.
Brittany Lysik’s 10 kills notched a team-best for the Catamounts, and Katie Hennesseey had 34 assists. Liz Rondone put up 21 digs.
The Pack couldn’t get its offense in gear in the opening set, falling 14-25. Problems were adjusted before the second set however, as State posted a match-high .321 attack percentage in the second stanza. The Pack led by as many as eight points before winning 25-19.
NC State jumped out to a 9-3 advantage to begin the third frame but WCU chipped away at the lead, eventually coming to within two at 15-13. The rally wasn’t enough though, as several Wolfpack mini runs allowed State to escape unharmed, 25-19.
Western Carolina hit just .056 and mustered only nine kills in the fourth and final go-round as the Wolfpack grabbed its fourth victory on the season with another 25-19 decision. The Pack collected the first seven scores and led by as many as nine points while pounding out 13 kills.
The win eclipses the Pack's victory total from last season.
NC State will take on UNC Asheville at 7 p.m.
