Volleyball Falls to UNC-Asheville in 5 Sets

RALEIGH, N.C. NC State dropped a five-set marathon to UNC Asheville to close out play at the Hilton/RTP NC State Classic on Saturday, Sept. 13. Over two hours in duration, each teams traded blows before the Bulldogs were able to pick off the decisive fifth set.
State falls to 4-8 with the loss, while UNC Asheville moves to 5-4.
Arlee Tamietti, who was named to the all-tournament team following the match, put up 16 kills. Alex Smith etched a season-best 42 assists, and Kelly Wood recorded 17 digs. Margaret Salata had seven total blocks.
Kelsey Bonorden (15 kills), Heather Burns (15 kills), Lauren Ficker (14 kills) and Cindi Miller (11 kills) all offered big showings for the Bulldogs artillery.
The Pack dropped the opener 25-19 before firing back with a 17-25 win in the second and a 20-25 nod in the third.
The fourth stanza required extra play, with the Bulldogs needing 26 scores to put off State by the required two points necessary for victory.
The final act saw both teams exchanging punches, with the Pack taking an 8-6 advantage as both teams switched sides on the floor. Following the changeover however, NC State just wasn’t the same. UNC Asheville grabbed eight of nine scores, including six-straight, to mount a 14-9 lead. Two kills from Tamietti, as well as a tag-team block from Aiwane Iboaya and Keri DeMar, pulled the Pack back to within two, but a Burns kill ended the show at 15-12.
NC State will head to Greenville, N.C., next weekend for a tournament at East Carolina.
