Women's Golf Begins Season at Cougar Classic
9/12/2008 12:00:00 AM | Women's Golf
The women’s golf team opens its season this weekend like it has the last four years at the Cougar Classic in Charleston, S.C., at the Yeaman’s Hall Club hosted by the College of Charleston.
The Pack is coming off its most successful season in program history when Lauren Doughtie qualified as an individual for the NCAA Championships and the team missed the cut by a single stroke at the NCAA Central Regional in Austin, Texas.
Doughtie returns for her final go around with the Pack. She has set nearly every school record in her three seasons, including season (74.4) and career (75.7) stroke average. She tied for 34th at the NCAA Championships among a field of 126 competitors.
The Suffolk, Va., native was ranked among the top-60 collegiate golfers by both Golfstat and Golfweek/Sagarin at the end of the 2008 spring season.
Junior Emily Street is immediately in back of Doughtie in the school’s record books with a 76.2 career average. Street played well in the Cougar Classic last season, finishing tied for 17th with a collegiate low-54 hole score of 219 (+3).
Sisters, red-shirt junior Joanna and sophomore Julie Saleeby hail from Raleigh and are both expected to make strong contributions in 2008-09. They each recorded a 79.1 stroke average one year ago, but have been working hard all summer long to improve on that number.
New to the starting lineup for this opening tournament is freshman Meghan Chapman. She is a highly touted player from Seminole, Fla., that will jump right into the third-slot among the five Wolfpack golfers.
The projected starting lineup for the Pack
#1 Lauren Doughtie
#2 Emily Street
#3 Meghan Chapman
#4 Julie Saleeby
#5 Joanna Saleeby
