Women's Soccer Entertains Campbell Friday Night
9/11/2008 12:00:00 AM | Women's Soccer
Heading into this weekend’s two matches, the Wolfpack is one of only three teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference that remain unbeaten on the season.
NC State has run its record to 5-0 for its best start to a season since winning 14 in a row in 1991.
This Friday, the Pack welcomes local-rival Campbell, who has struggled to a 0-2-2 record thus far in 2008, for a 7 p.m. encounter at NC State Soccer Stadium.
Parking is available beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the parking deck next to Reynolds Coliseum, which is across Cates Avenue from the soccer field.
NC State is 11-0-1 all-time against the Camels, which includes a 3-0 victory last season at the HPU Invitational in High Point, N.C. Lindsay Vera, Kendall Irby and Tami Krzeszewski each scored that afternoon for the Pack.
Last weekend was a successful one for NC State with a pair of wins in the NC State/Residence Inn North Women’s Soccer Tournament. Friday, with the game time moved up with Tropical Storm Hanna bearing down on the Triangle, saw the Pack escape the heavy rain with a 1-0 win over Virginia Commonwealth. Lindsay Vera made a great play to score the game’s deciding goal.
Sunday brought Stetson to the pitch and it was another hard fought win after the Pack fell behind for the first time all season when the Hatters scored an early goal and kept that advantage through halftime.
Freshman Paige Dugal knotted the match up 1-1 just minutes into the second stanza and that led to three straight markers for the Pack and would hold on for the 3-2 victory.
Vera scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season on a penalty kick and ranks second in the ACC in points (12), goals (5), shots (28) and is tied for first with three game winners.
Sophomore Kara Baldy has provided the Wolfpack with a strong 1-2 scoring punch as she ranks tied for seventh in the ACC with nine points, while Nadia Aboulhosn is tied for fifteenth with seven points.
Freshman keeper Kim Kern has three shutouts to lead the league in goals-against-average, save percentage and saves per game.
Catching up with Campbell
Campbell has opened up the year with a pair of losses and two ties. Last time out the Camels lost 3-1 at VMI on Saturday. The club also fell 4-0 to No. 10 Duke earlier in the year. The club has posted ties against Longwood and Appalachian State.
Hanna Salmen leads the team with three points on one goal and an assist, while Rhonda Runion has also scored for the Camels.
Boomie Luck has played all 400 minutes in net and has a 1.80 GAA and has made 31 saves with one shutout.
Campbell was selected ninth in the preseason Atlantic Sun Conference poll
On Sunday the Pack hits the road for the first time all season at UMBC in Baltimore, Md. Last season NC State picked up a 3-1 victory in the first meeting between the two schools.
