Raleigh, N.C. - The NC State men’s soccer team begins ACC conference play this Friday night, traveling to rival No. 12 North Carolina for a 7:00 p.m. contest at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill.
The match-up between NCSU and UNC will be the ACC opener for both teams for the fourth straight year. The Wolfpack (0-2-1) and the Tar Heels (3-0-1) have had some memorable battles over the last few years, including meeting in the ACC Tournament four of the last seven seasons.
Last season will not be remembered as an offensive showing, but more of a defensive stalemate that saw only three combined shots on goal. The Tar Heels scored the game’s lone goal in the 73rd minute and recorded the shutout over the Wolfpack.
The last time the Pack played at UNC, NC State started its ACC conference slate off with a bang, knocking off No. 1 North Carolina in Chapel Hill, 3-1 in 2007. With the score tied 1-1 at the half, the Wolfpack used two second half goals to down the top-ranked Tar Heels. The win over UNC was the Pack’s first since the 1997 season, and the first win in Chapel Hill since 1996.
The 2005 battle at home was a game that many fans will remember. The Wolfpack pulled out the dramatics in that early season matchup, battling No. 2 North Carolina to a 2-2 tie at SAS Soccer Stadium. After a scoreless first half, the scoring picked up. NC State opened up the scoring with a goal by Aaron King in the 77th minute. The Tar Heels came back and matched that goal with a penalty kick by Ben Hunter in the 84th minute.
Just as the game was a minute from overtime, both teams ended up finding the back of the net once more. First it was Hunter with a free kick with 56 seconds left, only to be matched by a goal from NC State’s El Hadj Cisse with less than a second to play. After 20 more minutes, 110 minutes overall, the game ended 2-2.
NC State enters ACC play with a record of 0-2-1 so far in the 2008 season. The Pack is in the midst of playing three of its first four games away from Raleigh, but will return to home action next week and play seven of its next eight games at the new NC State Soccer Stadium. The Pack lost both of its games last weekend at the Duke/adidas Classic, to American 3-0 and to No. 16 Harvard 3-1. NC State opened its season with a 1-1 tie to Mercer.
North Carolina comes into the game with a record of 3-0-1. Last weekend, the Tar Heels had a strong showing at the Deacon Fall Classic, defeating South Carolina 3-1, and then tying No. 14 UCLA 1-1.
