Kansas Sweeps Volleyball

RICHMOND, Va. Kansas (1-1) swept the NC State volleyball team (0-3) in three sets on Saturday, Aug. 30, in the Pack’s first of two matches on the day at the Virginia Commonwealth Third Degree Sportswear Invitational. Co-captain Arlee Tamietti posted nine kills for the second-straight match, while Kelly Wood and Allyson Weissberg added seven digs each. Alex Smith put up 14 assists.
Karina Garlington paced the Jayhawks with 14 kills and five service aces. Nicole Tate supplied 29 assists, and Melissa Manda had 11 digs.
State led briefly in the first set at 11-13, but six-straight KU scores, four via aces from Garlington, put the Jayhawks ahead at 17-13. The Pack would only collect two more points going forward, falling 25-15. State hit .389 in the set, its best effort of the season thus far.
Frame two continued to haunt the Pack in the early season, as NC State hit a paltry -.129 compared to Kansas’ .348 in a 25-13 losing effort. Both teams were knotted at 10-all early on, but a nine-point run put the Pack out of contention.
KU got the lead for good in the third and final set when a Wood service error set the scoreboard to 5-4. The Pack got to within six at 21-15, but the Jayhawks ended play at 25-15 with four-straight scores.
NC State will wrap up its stay in Richmond with a 4:30 p.m. bout against Central Michigan.
