RICHMOND, Va. NC State dropped its 2008 season opener to Virginia Commonwealth, 3-0, at the VCU Third Degree Sportswear Invitational on Friday, Aug. 29. Co-captain Arlee Tamietti and Allyson Weissberg both led the Pack with four kills each, while Keri DeMar, Aiwane Iboaya and co-captain Alex Smith each posted three.
State is now 15-4 all-time against the Rams.
The Pack led 4-9 early on in the first set, but a six-point Ram rally gave VCU a brief 10-9 advantage. From then on points seesawed back and forth between both teams, until three Wolfpack attack errors in a row ended the set at 25-20.
A 17-4 VCU start to the second stanza created and insurmountable hill for the Pack to climb, ultimately falling 25-11.
In the third and final frame, State trailed by three at 14-11 midway thorough play, but another VCU run, this time six-straight, put the action out of reach as the Pack lost 25-14.
Smith also lifted 16 assists with two service aces and three blocks, while Tamietti put up eight digs.
NC State will return to the court at 4:30 against Liberty.
