RALEIGH, N.C. The 2008 volleyball season will begin for NC State this weekend, Aug. 29-30, at the Virginia Commonwealth Third Degree Sportswear Invitational in Richmond, Va. The Pack will play four matches throughout the two-day spread.
The campaign will officially begin on Friday, Aug. 29, as the Pack takes on host Virginia Commonwealth at 12 noon before facing Liberty at 4:30 p.m. On Saturday, Aug. 30, NC State will battle Kansas at 12 noon and Central Michigan at 4:30 p.m.
The new-look Pack features 16 players, including nine returning letterwinners from a year ago. Middle blocker Aiwane Iboaya stands as the lone senior on a squad that boasts seven newcomers and four freshmen. Sophomore setter Alex Smith and opposite side junior transfer Arlee Tamietti serve as the team captains.
The Pack is a combined 22-5 all-time versus the tournament field, posting a 15-3 slate against Virginia Commonwealth while going 5-1 with Liberty and 1-1 against Kansas. NC State toppled Central Michigan in the only meeting between the two programs.
The home portion of NC State’s schedule won’t begin until it hosts the Hilton/RTP NC State Classic, Sept. 12-13 at historic Reynolds Coliseum.
