Second Straight Shutout Leads Pack over Western

RALEIGH, N.C. Paige Dugal and Nadia Aboulhosn scored second half goals to give NC State a 2-0 victory over Western Carolina Sunday afternoon at NC State Soccer Stadium
Freshman Kim Kern turned in her second straight clean sheet with four saves to move NC State to 2-0 on the season, while Western falls to 0-2 without scoring a goal this weekend after falling 1-0 to East Carolina on Friday.
The Pack wasted no time in the second half to take the lead by scoring just 32 seconds into action. Aboulhson started the play from the middle of the field passing it to Friday night’s hero Kara Baldy, who made a great touch through the center of the field releasing Dugal towards net.
The local product from Garner corralled the pass and buried her shot into the lower right corner for her first collegiate marker at 45:32.
NC State controlled play for the majority of the second half but was unable to put away the feisty Catamounts until sophomore Alyson Santilli sent a pass to the left flank as Aboulhosn was making her run from her defensive back position. Freshman Amanda Carr also picked up an assist on the goal.
The second-year Raleigh native corralled the pass, took two dribbles and rifled her shot into the upper right corner over the arms of Western keeper Caitlin Williams (10 saves) at the 81:57 mark.
The Catamounts nearly got one back in the 85th minute when Shannon Fowkes blasted a point-blank shot on net, but Kern made her best save of the weekend to preserve the shutout.
It was the second time in three years that the Pack has begun its season with a pair of shutouts. The 2006 squad actually started that campaign with four.
Baldy, who scored the overtime winner against Wofford two nights ago, had the best chance for the Pack in the first half when she escaped the Catamounts defense and was alone heading towards net, but her shot was pushed aside by Williams.
That play was preceded by an apparent goal by Western at the other end, but the referee whistled an offside call. An alert Kern realized most on the field thought play was stopped so she kicked the ball to midfield and was hauled in by Baldy.
Freshman Tanya Cain also had a good look in the 36th minute but Williams stuffed her shot as the two players collided inside the box.
NC State held a dominating 17-8 shot advantage and a 5-2 lead in corner kicks.
