RALEIGH, N.C. Under an overcast sky, the NC State men’s soccer team took to the field for the first time this season on Wednesday morning. The Wolfpack will hold two practice sessions a day until the fall semester starts on August 20, focusing on building team chemistry as the Pack will continue to get ready for its season opener on August 30 against Mercer. Here are some early season notes:
Returning to action A pair of players had to miss the 2007 season due to injury, both of those players were back in action at the first practice. Junior Ronnie Bouemboue was named to the 2006 ACC All-Tournament team but had knee surgery after the season and sat out all of 2007. He returned to full speed this past spring, and will occupy one of the forward positions. Midfielder Kris Byrd was slowed in the preseason of his rookie campaign last year, and ended up redshirting the year, but he is now vying for a starting outside midfield spot.
Newcomers galore With only 11 returning players that have previous playing experience at NC State, many new faces have joined the Pack for the 2008 campaign. A total of 14 newcomers are starting their first season with the program, including five transfers who are all looking to make an immediate impact with the Wolfpack.
New Home for Pack - A new era of Wolfpack soccer will begin in 2008, with the opening of the NC State Soccer Stadium located in the heart of campus. For the first time in school history, the Pack will be able to play night games, as the new soccer stadium is located inside NC State’s track under stadium lights. One of the top features is the new scoreboard, equipped with full-Matrix capabilities.
First Look After only three days of practice, the Wolfpack will be in full uniform for its annual Red/White game this Saturday night. Fans will be able to get a first look at the new NC State Soccer Stadium, as the Pack will take the field at 7:00 p.m.
