Moore, Quattlebaum Named CPL All-Stars

RALEIGH, N.C. NC State’s Wade Moore and Dusty Quattlebaum will play in the Coastal Plain League All-Star Game, to be held Tuesday night at McCrary Park in Asheboro, N.C.
Moore will start for the American team in the CPL All-Star Game. Through games of July 20 he was batting .286 (42-for-147) with seven doubles, one home run, 11 RBIs and 11 steals in 12 attempts for the Forest City Owls. Moore had a .354 slugging percentage and a .390 on-base percentage.
Quattlebaum will be a reserve infielder for the American team. Playing this summer for the Outer Banks Daredevils, Quattlebaum was hitting .277 (38-for-137) with 11 doubles, one triple, one home run and 23 RBIs. He led the Daredevils in doubles and RBIs. He had a .353 slugging percentage and a .373 on-base percentage.
Moore and Quattlebaum are the first NC State players to earn CPL All-Star status since Adam Hargrave in 2003. They are the first pair of Wolfpack players named to the CPL All-Star Game in the same season.
During the 2008 season at NC State, Moore appeared in 32 games, started twice, and batted .250 in 16 at-bats. Moore is a rising junior. Quattlebaum, who had shoulder surgery in the fall of 2007, appeared in five games and had one hit in five at-bats. Quattlebaum is a rising sophomore.
Also in the CPL: While catcher Chris Schaeffer did not make the Coastal Plain League All-Star Game, he is having a fine summer with the Fayetteville Swamp Dogs. In 17 games, Schaeffer is hitting .279 (14-for-51) with a double, a home run and seven RBIs. A rising sophomore, Schaeffer played in 51 games and started 39 during the spring. He batted .298 with three doubles, three home runs and 19 RBIs for the Wolfpack.
Cape League: NC State has four players in the Cape Cod League this summer, three of them playing for North Carolina head coach Mike Roberts at Cotuit. Second baseman Dallas Poulk was hitting .263 (31-for-118) in 31 games for the Kettleers. He had six doubles and 10 RBIs. A rising junior, Poulk batted .286 with 11 doubles, eight home runs and 33 RBIs for the Wolfpack in 2008.
Sam Brown and Alex Sogard, both rising juniors, were pitching for Cotuit. Sogard, a lefthander, was 0-1 with a 4.63 ERA in six appearances, including one start. Sogard had worked 11 2/3 innings and allowed 18 hits, walked four and struck out seven. Sogard finished the spring with a 4-2 record and a 4.35 ERA.
Brown, a righthander, was 0-0 with a 3.63 ERA. In 10 appearances, all in relief, he had pitched 19 2/3 innings with four walks and 25 strikeouts. Brown was 4-1 with a 3.74 ERA for the Wolfpack in the spring.
At Hyannis in the Cape League, outfielder Marcus Jones was hitting .200 (13-for-65) in 18 games. Jones, a rising senior, batted .318 with 13 doubles, seven home runs, 49 RBIs and a team-best 12 steals at NC State in the spring.
Sogard, Brown and Jones all were drafted in the MLB June draft and have until August 15 to sign or opt to return to school. Jones was taken in the 11th round by the Washington Nationals, Brown in the 18th round by the Arizona Diamondbacks, and Sogard in the 26th round by the Diamondbacks. Jones and Sogard both were selected by their hometown teams.
