NC State men's track and field will send five student-athletes to the NCAA Outdoor Championships, June 11-14 in Des Moines, Iowa. Four seniors lead the push, with Dexter Adams, Stephen Furst, Kevin Hutton and Tibor Vegh. Sophomore John Martinez will also compete in the championships.
Adams will compete in the outdoor long jump after finishing second in the NCAA Regional Championships last weekend. He finished sixth in the indoor long jump to earn all-America honors earlier this year. He currently ranks 14th in the nation in the event during the outdoor season with an outdoor best mark of 25'09.25". This is Adams' second trip to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in addition to two NCAA Indoor Championships appearances.
Furst is competing in his first NCAA Championships after having a nearly flawless outdoor season in his final semester of competition with the Wolfpack. He will be competing in the 5,000m after a 10th place showing at the regional meet. His mark from earlier this year - 13:49.19 - ranks seventh nationally in 2008 and is the fastest Wolfpack time since 1992, and the third best mark overall in school history. He won the 5,000m and 10,000m at the ACC Outdoor Championship and then followed that up with a win in the 5,000m at the prestigious Penn Relays.
Hutton is making his first appearance to the NCAA Championships and will compete in the 400m Intermediate Hurdles. Hutton is the two-time defending ACC Outdoor Champion in the event and currently ranks 24th nationally with a 50.74. His lifetime personal record of 50.44 ranks second in school history.
Vegh will compete in the steeplechase at the NCAA Outdoors after qualifying in three different events for the NCAA Regionals. Vegh finished 20th at the 2007 NCAA Outdoor Championships in the steeplechase and is currently ranked 25th nationally in the event. Vegh earned All-ACC honors earlier this season with a second place finish in the steeplechase.
Martinez is making his first trip to the NCAA Outdoor Championships after an impressive season, particularly in the steeplechase, an event that he ranks 10th nationally in with a time of 8:44.92. That time ranks fifth in school history and he earned All-ACC honors with a third place finish at the outdoor meet earlier this season.
