NC State women’s golfers Lauren Doughtie and Emily Street have qualified for the 2008 U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship.
Doughtie, of Suffolk, Va., shot even-par 71 at Laurel Hill Golf Club in sectional qualifying in Lorton, Va.
Street, from Forest City, N.C., fired a five-over 77 to earn the fourth spot at sectional qualifying at Ironwood in Greenville, N.C.
The national championship will take place June 16-21 at Erin Hills in Erin, Wis.
Doughtie, who recently finished her junior year with the Wolfpack, earned medalist honors in qualifying.
Doughtie got off to a strong start, shooting two-under 34 on the outward nine by posting birdie at the par-4 first hole and recorded birdies on both par 5s on the outward half. At the fifth, she got up and down from the fringe for birdie and two-putted for birdie at the par-5 ninth hole.
The showing continued a season of outstanding play for Doughtie, who also was medalist at U.S. Women’s Open local qualifying last month at Pinewild Country Club down in Pinehurst. Not to mention, she qualified for the NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championship as an individual, becoming the first NC State player to accomplish the feat. At NCAA’s, she tied for 34th at the University of New Mexico Championship Course in Albuquerque, N.M.
Doughtie credited work with her instructor, Kandi Comer, PGA, at Keswick-based Glenmore Country Club, with improving her putting via a setup change and her ball striking has admittedly been more consistent.
“Kandi and I pretty much completely changed my putting stroke this spring,” said Doughtie, a finalist at the 2007 Virginia State Golf Association Women’s Amateur Championship. “My putting is a lot better than it used to be. That has been a huge factor and I’m finally consistently hitting the ball well, rather than it being a tournament here and a tournament there. I’ve had a really good spring and hope that continues the rest of the summer.”
A first team All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection, Doughtie is NC State’s all-time stroke average leader and became just the fourth Wolfpacker to earn All-ACC accolades. Doughtie registered a team-leading 74.3 stroke average during her third collegiate campaign.
Street, who finished her NC State sophomore campaign in May, will join Doughtie at the Carolinas sectional qualifying for the U.S. Women’s Open championship next week at Forest Creek Golf Club on Monday, June 9.
The U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
