ERIN, Wis. NC State women’s golfers Lauren Doughtie and Emily Street both made the cut after two rounds of stroke play at the 2008 U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship at Erin Hills Golf Course.
Doughtie, from Suffolk, Va., tied for fourth after a two-round total of 147 (73-74), while Street is tied for 32nd at 156 (77-79) at the par-73, 6,178-yard layout.
Beginning from No. 10, Doughtie hovered around even-par all afternoon. She moved to one-under with a birdie at the par-4, 11th hole, but gave that momentum right back with consecutive bogeys at 12 and 13. But as she normally does, making up ground on the par-5’s with her length off the tee, Doughtie birdied the remaining two par-5’s at 14 and 18 to make the turn at 1 (36).
Doughtie then posted pars at Nos. 1-3, but bogeys at 4 and 6 left her at one-over for her round.
Meanwhile, Street also began from No. 10 and hit a rough stretch after beginning with consecutive pars. She bogeyed five of the next six holes and made the turn at five-over 42.
Street did steady her round on the front side with seven pars and a birdie at the par-3 ninth to shoot one-over on the front nine and finish at +6 (79) for the round, which firmly entrenched her in the field to make the match play round.
After Tuesday’s second round of stroke play, the low 64 scorers advanced to match play, which begins Wednesday.
Doughtie will take on Erica Moston of Belmont, Calif., at 9:42 a.m. local time in the Upper Bracket, while Street will go against Pennapa Pulsawath of Thailand at 11:03 a.m. in the Lower Bracket.
Winners of the 32 match play pairings on Wednesday will continue on with second and third round action Thursday. The 36-hole final is scheduled for Saturday.
The U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links is one of 13 championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association each year, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
