Pub Links Championship Begins Well for Doughtie, Street

ERIN, Wis. NC State women’s golfer Lauren Doughtie is tied for sixth after shooting an even-par-round of 73 on Monday at the first round of the 2008 U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship at Erin Hills Golf Course.
Wolfpack teammate Emily Street fired a four-over 77 and is tied for 29th among a field of 153 competitors.
Doughtie is only two shots in back of the leaders, a group of four golfers that shot two-under 71’s at the 6,178-yard layout.
The Suffolk, Va., native was able to recover from a rough start as she made the turn at three-over par.
“I am feeling pretty good now,” said Doughtie. “Hopefully I can carry momentum into tomorrow.” She tees of Tuesday at 1:40 p.m. from No. 10 tee.
That momentum featured three birdies in the final five holes yesterday, including one on the home hole, a 532-yard, par-5.
Meanwhile, the front nine proved to be just as difficult for Street as she went out in 40 after four bogeys. But the Forest City, N.C., native did shoot an even-par back nine with a birdie at the par-4 15th that put her in good position to make the match play rounds.
Street also begins on the back Tuesday with an early morning 8:50 a.m. tee off.
After Tuesday’s second round of stroke play, the low 64 scorers advance to match play, which begins Wednesday. The 36-hole final is scheduled for Saturday.
The U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links is one of 13 championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association each year, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
