AUSTIN, Texas Lauren Doughtie and Stephanie Derrey are both in the top-10 and NC State is in a tie for 10th place after the second round at the 2008 NCAA Women’s Central Regional at the University of Texas Golf Club.
The Wolfpack has positioned themselves for a realistic chance of making the programs first NCAA Championship appearance after firing a team score of +16 (304) during Friday’s round and has compiled a two-day total of +28 (300-304=604).
NC State will head into Sunday’s final round only four shots out of eighth place. The top eight clubs advance to the NCAA Championship.
One old adage in golf is to post a score, get in the clubhouse and see how a particular day will play out. That was exactly what NC State did on Friday. Playing bright and early at 8 am from No. 10 tee, the Wolfpack was one of the first clubs to finish up.
As it played out, the red and white fell all the way back to 14th in the 21-team standings after beginning the day tied for 9th. But by recording an early score the team sat and watched the field come back to the Wolfpack.
For the second straight day the Wolfpack got off to a strong start with a combined seven birdies over the first six holes that put the Pack at two-under for the day and was tied for sixth.
But the final three holes of the back nine proved very difficult as the team played the trio of finishing holes a combined 12-over par to fall back into the middle of the team standings. All five golfers bogeyed the 180-yard par-3 16th and didn’t fair much better on the par-4 17th with two posting double bogey and two others settling for bogey.
Doughtie picked up right where she left off on Thursday by posting birdie on her first two holes of the morning to move to 5 for the tournament. However, she gave back three strokes at 16 and 17 to finish at +1 (37) on the back nine.
She then had two birdies and two bogeys on the front nine to finish up at one-over 73 today to remain in the top-10 alone in sixth place at 2 (69-73=142).
Derrey flirted with a record-breaking round on Friday. She had her game rolling in the morning with four birdies over her first six holes that propelled her into the top-5 of the leader board. She birdied the par-4 10th to begin her day and then ran off three straight birdies on Nos. 13, 14 and 15. She would finish up her back nine at 3 (33).
She didn’t cool down on the front nine as she began with a birdie at No. 1 and then made consecutive birdies at Nos. 5 and 6 to move to 6 for the day and five-under for the tournament. At the time it tied her for third overall with younger sister Valentine, who had yet to tee off.
But she finished double bogey, bogey, double bogey to give back five shots over the last three holes to wind up 1 (71) for the day. The bright side is she tied with two others for the lowest score in the morning, while Derrey also moved up the leader board into a tie for 9th overall as she will begin tomorrow’s final round at even-par (73-71=144).
Sophomore Emily Street is tied for 75th after shooting a seven-over 79 today and stands at +13 (78-79=157) for the tournament. Today she featured a pair of birdies, but ran into five bogeys and one double bogey over a seven-hole stretch. However, Street did finish up strong with four pars and one birdie over the final five holes.
Freshman Julie Saleeby fired an 81 and is tied for 86th at +17 (80-81=162). She was holding her round together at two-over through six holes until she suffered a stretch of bogeying five of six holes. She did record an important finish with par at the final three holes and added a birdie at the par-5 fifth hole.
Sophomore Joanna Saleeby struggled all morning and finished up with an 87. She is 103rd at +25 (82-87=169). She did finish on a high note with a birdie at the par-5 ninth hole.
TCU’s Valentine Derrey leads after 36 holes at 7 (137), followed by UCLA’s Maria Jose Uribe at 6 (138) and Purdue’s Maria Hernandez at 5 (139).
UCLA continues to lead the field at even-par (576), Purdue at +6 (582) and TCU at +9 (585).
The final day of the 54-hole tournament begins Saturday morning at 8:10 am. The Wolfpack begins its day at 9 am.
