RALEIGH, N.C. Seven very talented newcomers mark the 2008-09 NC State men’s swimming and diving class, as announced by head coach Brooks Teal on Thursday, May 29. Daniel Basler, Conor Brennan, Gaites Brown, Andrew Fink, Sean Reams, Jimmy Ross and Steven Wright will all join the program in time for next season.
Basler, out of nearby Winston-Salem, N.C., is a former top-16 age group record holder. He collected state championships in the 100-butterfly as a junior and qualified for Junior Nationals. Looking to study business, Basler was a three-time All-America and two-time team captain under coach Ron Turner.
Brennan, of Littleton, Colo., stands as a relative newcomer on the national sprint circuit. After making his first junior national cut this year under head coach Tom Byorick at Heritage High School, Brennan only looks to improve as he begins his college career next season. An All-American in multiple events, he also served as the captain of his basketball team in 2006. Brennan, who recently won a state title in the 50-free, will pursue a degree in business.
Brown brings a wealth of experience to the Pack. A senior national qualifier out of Richmond, Va., he swims for the nationally recognized NOVA program under his father Geoff Brown. He arrived on the national scene with a tremendous showing at the 2007 junior national meet in Indianapolis, and is an All-American who will make an immediate impact on the sprint and mid-distance freestyle events while in Raleigh. A student at Deep Run High School, Brown plans to pursue a degree in business, alongside a minor in languages.
Fink chose to run with the Pack over Kentucky, Clemson, West Virginia and Virginia Tech. A four-time high school All-America, the West Chester, Pa. native won three state championships in 2008 (100-free, 200-free and 400-free) under the guidance of coaches Scott Elliott and Jeff Bott. He will study marketing and business.
Reams, out of North Easton, Mass., is a four-time Catholic Conference All-Star and a three-time Boston Globe All-Scholastic honoree. He had a strong showing at the 2007 Junior National Championships after working with coach Chuck Batchelor. He will pursuer a degree in business.
Ross comes to NC State after years of training under Jersey Wahoos coaches John Carroll and former Wolfpack standout Brad Bowser. A first-team all-conference selection and first-team All-South performer in the 100-back, Ross is a Junior National qualifier and two-time team MVP. A native of Vorhees, N.J., Ross will major in business with a concentration in international relations.
Hailing from Orlando, Fla., Wright looks to uphold the storied tradition of NC State world-class sprinters. A 2007 Florida state champion in the 50-free and runner-up in the 100-free, Wright brings considerable size, talent and strength to a young corps of sprinters. He is a multiple event All-American and national record holder. Wright also served as team captain for Trinity Preparatory School where he swam under former Wolfpack standout Rocco Aceto. Aside from being a school record holder, he is also an accomplished musician with plans to study pre-med.
State will kick off its 2008-09 season with its annual Red & White Scrimmage on Friday, Oct. 3 at 5 p.m.
