The par-71 golf course, being built by the Palmer Design Group on the southwest corner of NC State’s Centennial campus, now measures more than 7,100 yards from the back tees, which is some 200 yards longer than the original design. That includes the 625-yard par 5 No. 11 and three par 4s that can measure 460 yards or longer.
The course, located on 200 acres near the North Carolina State Farmer’s Market, is slated to open next spring, and construction, as of now, remains ahead of schedule. The course is routed, most tee boxes have been built, greens have been laid out and cart paths have been installed, in preparation for the late summer grass-growing season.
Carolinas Golf Group, which will maintain and operate the course for NC State, has also hired former Prestonwood Country Club director of golf course and landscape maintenance Ron Gilmore, an NC State graduate, to be the course superintendent.
Two of Arnold Palmer’s top architects, Erik Larsen and Brandon Johnson, are both NC State graduates and have had a heavy hand in the design and construction of the course.
