Senior Leigha Hancock will head to Athens, Ga. on Thursday, April 24 to compete on the balance beam at the NCAA Championship. Hancock advanced to the championship after tying for first on beam at the Southeast Regional in Gainesville, Fla. on April 12. With a score of 9.875, Hancock won her second career event title at a regional, winning in 2006 on floor. She is the only Wolfpack gymnast to win an event in a regional competition.
"As far as Leigha goes, she was the first gymnast to ever win an event at a regional championship, and now she has done it twice, and on two different events," head coach Mark Stevenson said. "I can't be any prouder of Leigha and the job she has done. She is the best gymnast we have ever had at NC State, and it will be a long time, if ever, before we have someone better."
Hancock’s highest score on the beam this season was a 9.900, which she posted twice, at the final home meet and at New Hampshire. She posted her career-high score of 9.925 in the event at the team’s first quad meet in 2006. Overall this season, Hancock has averaged a 9.79 on beam, and she has taken first place in the event seven times.
