RALEIGH, N.C. - The NC State women's soccer team inaugurated the new on campus NC State Soccer Field last week with a 3-2 extra session win over a perennial NCAA participant in UNC Greensboro.
The victory was the icing on an effective spring season for the Wolfpack that has transformed the team into a stronger club; both on and off the field according to head coach Laura Kerrigan.
However, what really came out of last Thursday’s match was bringing Wolfpack soccer back into the heart of campus, while also playing a home game under the lights.
Briana Cunningham keyed the victory for the Pack by scoring twice and assisting on the game winner just 25 seconds into overtime.
After the game last week Cunningham said, "Our team is just so excited to have a convenient place for our fans and especially NC State students to come out and watch our games. It was really amazing to play in front of big crowd.”
Last season’s leading scorer Lindsay Vera, who assisted on Cunningham’s first tally couldn’t say enough about the new on-campus facility.
“I think we really took pride in defending our’ field, our on campus field,” explained Vera. “Just knowing that students can come from study hall or the dining hall to watch our games is really going to benefit us in creating a home field advantage this fall.”
Kerrigan echoed the statements of her players that a new facility is going to benefit all phases of the Wolfpack soccer programs.
“Our players experienced a tremendous sense of pride representing NC State University and it is wonderful to be able to play in front of so many people here on our campus."
"It was fantastic to open up the new soccer stadium with a win. The atmosphere was electrifying. I cannot thank Lee Fowler, David Horning, Bobby Purcell and the entire Wolfpack Club for everything they have done to get our team playing on campus under the lights of the new soccer stadium.”
