
ACC Championship Brings 6th Place Finish from W. Golf

DAYTONA BEACH, FLA. NC State rebounded from Saturday’s unexpected round with a +13 (301) on Sunday to move up one slot to finish sixth at the 2008 ACC Women’s Golf Championship at the LPGA International Legends Course.
The Wolfpack finished the 54-hole event at +51 (299-315-301=915).
Sophomore Emily Street maintained her top-20 standing all weekend long with a three-over 75 today to finish tied for 19th at +10 (72-79-75=226). The Forest City, N.C., native’s final round was extremely steady with 10 straight pars to finish her round. Her only blemishes were three front-side bogeys.
Junior Lauren Doughtie rebounded from yesterday’s 85 with a one-over 73 that moved her 12 spots up the standings to finish tied for 25th at +16 (74-85-73=232). The 59th rated player nationally looked more like herself today with a pair of birdies in the first eight holes. Her last 10 holes featured nine pars and one bogey at the par-4 17th.
NC State senior Stephanie Derrey finished her final round in an ACC Championship with her best effort of the weekend, a five-over 77 to finish for tied for 28th at +17 (76-80-77=233).
Joanna Saleeby played very well today to post her best round of the weekend with a four-over 76. The Raleigh native made the turn at just two-over and moved to +1 with a birdie at the par-3 12th hole. Later she added another birdie at the par-5 16th. Just like Derrey, Saleeby finished the championship tied for 28th at +17 (78-79-76=233).
Freshman Julie Saleeby finished one stroke back to place in a tie for 33rd at +18 (77-77-80=234). The most consistent Wolfpack golfer through two rounds, Saleeby fell off her prior 36 hole pace with a final-round 80.
No. 2 ranked Duke won its 13th consecutive ACC title as the Blue Devils +7 (871) defeated Virginia (872) by one stroke. The Cavaliers had led the tournament through the first two rounds. The Blue Devils and Cavaliers were tied entering the final round of the event.
Duke won it on the final hole as both teams walked on the 18th green tied after 53 holes. The Blue Devils' Amanda Blumenherst pared the hole while Virginia's Calle Nielson bogeyed the hole to give Duke the one-shot victory, setting a championship record for slimmest margin of victory.
Blumenherst won the individual championship for the third consecutive season with a score of 4 (212). Blumenherst defeated Florida State's Caroline Westrup by one stroke for the individual championship as Westrup bogeyed the final hole.
