Head Coach Page Marsh and the NC State women’s golf team heads to Daytona Beach, Fla., to compete in the 20th annual ACC Championship this weekend. The championship takes place April 18-20 at the Par 72, 6,315-yard LPGA International Legends Course.
The Wolfpack is coming off its tournament victory at the Lady Seahawk Classic last week at River Landing Golf Course in Wallace, N.C. NC State (896) matched its lowest team score of the year with a final round three-over 291 to win in come-from-behind fashion by one stroke over UNC Greensboro.
The win was the program’s seventh team title and first since garnering the Papa John’s Collegiate (Feb. 19-21, 2006) in Miami Lakes, Fla.
NC State is currently ranked 38th in the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index. Individually, Lauren Doughtie ranks No. 62 in the individual standings.
Doughtie, a native of Suffolk, Va., will be gunning to become the first Wolfpack golfer to win the ACC individual crown. On the season, Doughtie has totaled a 74.2 stroke average, but more impressive is her 73.3 average in four spring tournaments, which has featured three-consecutive top-10 finishes, including a second and a third-place finish.
The career stroke-average leader in program history (75.8), Doughtie demolished the 54-hole school record earlier this spring when she fired a 4 (212) to finish runner-up at the LSU/Cleveland Golf Classic.
Also playing well this spring has been senior Stephanie Derrey, who is coming off a career-best tied for fourth placement at the Lady Seahawk Classic. The Paris, France native is second on the team with a 75.5 stroke average for the season. She brings a wealth of experience to a rather young group as her 86 career rounds is the fourth most in program history.
Derrey received a sneak preview of the LPGA Legends Course last year at the NCAA Championship when she walked the course with her younger sister Valentine, who was competing as a freshman at TCU.
Emily Street has had an up-and-down sophomore season for the red and white, finishing with a 76.1 stroke average. She posted a pair of top-20’s in the fall when she shot back-to-back career-low 54-hole scores of 219 to open the season. However, her swing escaped her in the spring until coming back with a tie for 11th finish last time out to help post the victory in the Lady Seahawk Classic.
The Forest City, N.C., native owns the second lowest career scoring average at NC State at 76.3, while Derrey has moved into third (76.96), just ahead of current FUTURES Tour member Briana Vega (2002-04).
Joanna Saleeby is coming off her best finish of the spring when she tied for 30th at the Lady Seahawk. The Raleigh native is fourth on the team this year with a 78.5 stroke average. She posted a top-20 finish (T19) in the fall at the New Mexico State Tournament.
Freshman Julie Saleeby has competed in six of the eight tournaments this year with a 79.1 stroke average. She shot her best round of the season, an even-par 72, during the second round of the Lady Tar Heel Invite that helped propel the Pack to a seventh place finish that ultimately gave the club its first top-25 ranking in program history back in October.
Marsh is in her 8th season with the Wolfpack. She has guided NC State to six straight NCAA Regional Appearances and by all accounts will make it seven in a row in 2008. The 2002 ACC Coach of the Year’s high water mark at the ACC Championship has been a pair of third-place finishes (2002, 2005) since taking over the reinstated program in 2000.
