4/12/2008 12:00:00 AM | Women's Gymnastics
The NC State gymnastics team was honored with three NCAA Southeast Regional Awards as announced by the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches (NACGC). Mark Stevenson was named Coach of the Year, Karen Pleasants was named Assistant Coach of the Year and senior Leigha Hancock was tabbed as Gymnast of the Year.
For Stevenson it was his third NCAA Southeast Region Coach of the Year award, winning it in 1993, 1994 and 2000. Stevenson helped guide the Wolfpack to the NCAA Regionals for the 25th time in his tenure, where the team will compete tonight, April 12, at the NCAA Southeast Regional in Gainesville, Fla. NC State is currently ranked No. 21 nationally and was ranked as high as No. 17 earlier this season, the highest national ranking since reaching No. 13 in 2000. Two weeks ago he was named EAGL Coach of the Year for the third straight season.
Pleasants earned the NCAA Southeast Region Assistant Coach of the Year award in her third season with the Wolfpack program. Pleasants focuses primarily on beam and floor, choreographing routines for both events. She was a two-time team MVP and a NCAA regional qualifier under Stevenson while a gymnast at NC State.
Hancock added yet another award to her stellar resum in earning the first NCAA Southeast Region Gymnast of the Year award in school history. She was the EAGL Outstanding Gymnast of the Year and was first-team all-conference on vault, floor and beam. Hancock ranks 10th nationally on the floor exercise and is the only NC State gymnast to ever advance to the NCAA National Championships after winning the floor exercise at the 2006 NCAA Southeast Regional. She also ranks second all-time in school history with 21 career 9.9 or higher scores, two off of the school record.
NC State is currently competing at the NCAA Southeast Regional in Gainesville, Fla., which begins at 7 pm. Live streaming video can be found HERE, for free, for tonight's meet. The top-two teams and top-two individuals in the all-around not on advancing teams will head to the national championships in Athens, Georgia on April 24-26.
