The NC State gymnastics team, ranked No. 21 nationally, was selected to the NCAA Southeast Regional in Gainesville, Fla, on Saturday, April 12. No. 3 Florida (host), No. 9 UCLA, No. 15 Nebraska, No. 25 West Virginia and North Carolina will join the Wolfpack at the regional.
The top two teams and the top two all-around competitors (who are not on an advancing team) from each NCAA regional will receive an automatic berth to the national championships in Athens, Georgia, April 24-26, hosted by the University of Georgia. In addition, the event winners at the regional championships will advance to the national championships (in that event only) if they are not part of a qualifying team or the all-around qualifiers.
Senior Leigha Hancock is the only NC State gymnast to win an event title at the NCAA Regionals and advance to the NCAA Championships, winning the floor in 2006.
The Wolfpack has finished third at regionals four times, with the last coming in 1999. The team finished 11th nationally in 1998 in its only trip to the NCAA Championships as a team.
NC State is fresh off of a second-place finish at the 2008 EAGL Championships and leads its conference in Regional Qualifying Score (RQS) and national ranking. NC State also leads the conference all-time with 10 top-3 finishes in 13 EAGL Championships.
