COLUMBUS, Ga. No. 2 Texas A&M flexed its muscle against NC State, downing the Pack 4-0 in its final game at the NFCA Leadoff Classic on Sunday, March 2. Allison Presnell had two hits, and Alyssa Ishibashi added another single for the Wolfpack.
State moves to 9-11 in defeat, while the Aggies climb to 22-3. Lindsay Campana (3-9) took the loss, while Megan Gibson moves to 12-0. Gibson allowed just three hits while fanning a season-high 10 batters.
Campana issued back-to-back free passes to start the bottom of the second, and the Aggies made her pay for it. Holly Ridley smacked a double over Blair Harkey’s head in deep-center, putting Texas A&M up 2-0.
Three straight one-out base hits plated another run for the Aggies in the bottom of the third. Megan Gibson and Jamie Hinshaw placed back-to-back base hits before Erin Glasco scored Gibson with an RBI single up the middle.
Shanna Smith grabbed a leadoff walk and stole second for the Pack in the top of the fourth, but it was all for naught. Ishibashi went down swinging, Alyssa Allbritten lined out to third, and Lacey Holm grounded out to second.
State picked up its first hit of the game on a Presnell double to begin the top of the fifth. A Kristine Bechtholdt grounder to second sent Presnell to third, but Lisa Nentwig went down swinging and Ashleigh Davis got caught looking.
Texas A&M added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth on a Jamie Lobpries solo homer to left.
The red and white had another scoring opportunity in the top of the sixth, but things just didn’t shake out the way they would’ve liked. Ishibashi sent a two-out single up the middle, and took to second when Lobpries bobbled the ball. Eliza Jacobellis then came on to run for Ishibashi, and quickly moved to third on a wild pitch. Jacobellis attempted to score on another errant pitch, but was tagged out at the plate to end the inning.
Mendy McKenzie took the reigns of the pitching duties for the Pack in the bottom of the sixth, holding the Aggies hitless.
Presnell added a two-out base hit to right in the top of the seventh, but Bechtholdt popped up to short to end the game.
State will return to the field tomorrow, Monday, March 3, with a single game at Georgia State in Atlanta, Ga. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
