Hancock, Seniors Pace Gymnastics on Senior Night

Leigha Hancock paced the No. 18 NC State gymastics team to a second place finish behind No. 5 LSU on Senior Night for six Wolfpackers. The Pack scored a 194.850, breaking a string of four straight meets of scoring a 195.000 or higher, although NC State has still hit that mark in six of the last eight meets overall. The Tigers used a team score of 196.500 to take first in the meet, with North Carolina (193.500) and George Washington (192.550) rounding out the field.
Hancock, a senior from Suffield, Conn., won the all-around (39.200) and the floor (9.875), defeating a pair of highly ranked opponents in the process. She beat out LSU's Ashleigh Claire-Kearney (second nationally) and Susan Jackson (14th) in the all-around. Hancock also finished higher than Jackson and Claire-Kearney by winning floor, with Jackson ranking third nationally and Claire-Kearney sixth. Hancock posted a 9.900, a season-high, to finish second on beam.
Seniors Heather Zolton (New Port Richey, Fla.), Kelsey Lee (Owings Mill, Md.) and Laurie Singer (Chapel Hill, N.C.) also competed for the Pack and had strong meets. Zolton finished fourth overall and second on the team in the all-around with a 39.050, including a 9.850 on beam to tie her season and career-high.
Lee posted a 9.800 on vault, finishing sixth in the event, while Singer competed on vault and bars.
Brittany Crosby (Chapin, S.C.) and Mackenzie Payne (Roanoke, Va.) were also recognized on Senior Night.
The Wolfpack's Taylor Seaman won bars with a score of 9.825 and tied for fourth on floor with a 9.800 to match teammate Ashley Shepard's season-high in the event. Lauren Deuser posted a season-high on the beam with a 9.800.
Freshman Brittney Hardiman continued her steady push towards EAGL Rookie of the Year, finishing seventh in the all-around with a 38.725, third on the team. Her scored included a 9.850 on beam, a season-high, and a 9.825 on vault.
NC State hits the road next weekend for a meet at New Hampshire before traveling to West Virginia to defend its 2007 EAGL title at the league championships, March 28-29.
