Weedon Honored By ACSMA with Francis Award

The Francis Award was established in 1990 and is presented annually by the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association (ACSMA) and the Atlantic Coast Conference in recognition of notable achievement and service to the media in the coverage of ACC sports. It is named in honor of the late Marvin “Skeeter” Francis, longtime sports information director at
Weedon has been a popular figure among media members throughout the ACC since becoming sports information director at NC State in 1960. After 12 years in that role, he moved into administration within the athletic program but continued to have a very visible and prominent presence at Wolfpack sporting events.
Fund-raiser, development officer, historian Weedon has filled many important roles for NC State Athletics. He was chairman of the Wolfpack’s “Celebration of 100 Years of Football” in 1991 and helped in the planning of the Carter-Finley Stadium expansion and the
In 2004, NC State honored Weedon by presenting him with the “Ronnie Shavlik Award” for his service to Wolfpack Athletics. He also is a former president of the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame.
While his roles have changed during his outstanding career, Weedon has remained a favorite of writers and broadcasters who have covered the Wolfpack the past five decades. He has played a key role in the history of the ACC and ACSMA is proud to honor him with the 2008 Francis Award.
