Clayton Shunick Named ACC Pitcher of the Week

GREENSBORO, N.C. NC State’s Clayton Shunick and Miami’s Yonder Alonso picked up their first-ever league recognition, as Alonso has been tabbed Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Player of the Week while Shunick earn Pitcher of the Week accolades for their performances on the field the week of March 3-9.
A unanimous selection for this week’s pitching honor, Shunick tossed a career high eight innings and struck out a career-high nine batters in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader against No. 12 Virginia. The shutout gave NC State a split of a doubleheader against the Cavaliers in last weekend’s conference opener. The junior from Alpharetta , Ga. , allowed three hits and one walk but did not give up a run in the 2-0 win. For the season, Shunick has made three appearances and allowed just one run, unearned, on 10 hits in 17 innings. He has walked one and struck out 18. The start vs. Virginia was his first of the season.
Alonso, a native of Coral Gables , Fla. , helped No. 6 Miami finish the week with a 4-0 record including a three-game sweep of Boston College in both teams’ conference opener last weekend. In the series against the Eagles, he collected three home runs and drove in six RBI in nine at-bats and also walked five times. The junior first baseman wrapped up the week with a .583 batting average and a total of eight RBI. He also posted a 1.333 slugging percentage and was 2-of-3 in stolen base attempts.
