ORLANDO, Fla. NC State run ruled Central Arkansas, 10-0, in five innings on Saturday, Feb. 9, at the UCF Softball Tournament in Orlando, Fla. Alyssa Ishibashi had three RBIs, while Lauren Peters and Allison Presnell both had two. Alyssa Allbritten went 3-for-3 and Lacey Holm mashed her first career home run.
The victory pushes the Pack’s record to 2-2, while UCA slides to 0-3. Mendy McKenzie (2-0) won her second-straight start, while Claire Collom fell to 0-1. McKenzie gave up just three hits in four innings of work, while walking one and striking out two.
The Pack hit paydirt early when Presnell scored Peters from first base with an RBI double to deep center in the bottom of the first.
State kept plugging away in the top of the second, adding another run to its tally. Allbritten ripped a two-bagger down the left line, then moved to third on a perfectly placed bunt single from Blair Harkey. Allbritten later scored on a wild pitch.
Moments later Collom was relieved of the Bears pitching duties after tossing an illegal pitch to Shanna Smith with two runners on base. She was replaced by Kora Behrens.
UCA gave the Pack a brief scare in the bottom of the third. Hannah Ambrose drew a walk, and Amanda Perrott followed with a base hit through the left side. But Presnell made an unassisted out on a grounder from Mady Lombard, and McKenzie pulled in a pop-up from Brittany Bearden with runners on second and third.
Holm belted her first career homer to kick-start the top of the fourth and put the red and white up 3-0. Allbritten followed with her second double of the game, this time of the ground rule variety, and Peters later dropped an RBI single into shallow right.
Central Arkansas put its first two batters on base in the bottom of the fourth, but failed to do any damage.
The Wolfpack scored five runs and put its first seven batters on safely before recording an out in an explosive top of the fifth. Kristine Bechtholdt walked and Holm singled again through the left side. Eliza Jacobellis then took over base running duties on first, and Allbritten loaded the bases with a single that landed on the wall and nearly escaped the yard in left.
Ishibashi came up next in a pinch-hit appearance, and made her presence known with a bases clearing triple to right. Mackenzie Mangum then drew a walk and Ashleigh Davis, who reentered in her original spot, swiped second. Smith followed with an RBI double into shallow right, and Collom resumed her post in the circle for the Bears.
Presnell later picked up another RBI with a grounder to second.
Aly Burr made her debut for the Pack in the bottom of the fifth, taking over the pitching duties for McKenzie and shutting the door on the game while picking up two strikeouts.
State will return to action tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 10, at 9 a.m. in its final game at the UCF Softball Tournament. The Pack will again face Central Arkansas.
