Baseball Takes First Road Trip

RALEIGH, N.C. With the schedule compacted by a later starting date, there will be few non-conference weekend road trips in college baseball this season. NC State takes its only non-conference weekend away from home this weekend at the Charleston Firefighter Memorial Challenge at Riley Park in Charleston, S.C.
The Wolfpack will kick off the weekend on Friday with a noon contest against Louisville, a 2007 College World Series participant. The Pack will play North Carolina A&T at 11 a.m. on Saturday, and conclude the weekend with a 2 p.m. game vs. The Citadel, the host school, on Sunday.
NC State is 2-1 after opening the season by taking two of three games from Appalachian State this past weekend at Doak Field at Dail Park. Louisville, ranked No. 22 by Rivals.com, is 2-1 following a three-game series last weekend vs. Cleveland State. North Carolina A&T is 2-2 following a sweep last weekend of Buffalo and losses this week to Appalachian State and Gardner-Webb. The Citadel also is 2-2. The Bulldogs dropped two of three games from Delaware over the weekend, then defeated UNC Wilmington on Wednesday.
NC State will send junior lefthander Eric Surkamp (1-0, 0.00) to the mound to face Louisville, which will counter with Big East preseason pitcher of the year Zach Pitts (1-0, 0.00).
Junior lefty Alex Sogard (0-1, 7.71) will pitch on Saturday vs. North Carolina A&T. The Aggies will counter with Tim Johnson (1-0, 1.00). Senior righthander Eryk McConnell will pitch Sunday for the Wolfpack against Wes Wrenn (0-0, 0.00).
All three games will be broadcast live on WKNC (88.1 FM). In addition, live video and live stats will be available at citadelsports.com and linked to gopack.com.
