CHARLESTON, S.C. NC State got back to its winning ways with a 5-2 decision over host College of Charleston in the second of two games at the Cougar Classic on Saturday, Feb. 23. The Wolfpack offense reeled off 11 hits, tied for second most on the still young season. Four State players (Alyssa Allbritten, Ashleigh Davis, Blair Harkey and Lacey Holm) had two hits each.
The win moves the red and white to 5-7, while the Cougars dip to 2-13.
Mendy McKenzie (3-2) tossed another solid outing, giving up just one earned run and four hits while collecting six strikeouts. Terri Mesko (0-7) absorbed the loss.
The Pack came out of the gate on fire in the top of the first, with its first four batters recording hits, including three doubles to get things started. Shanna Smith, Davis and Allbritten nailed back-to-back-to-back doubles, giving the red and white a quick 2-0 cushion.
Holm then beat out an infield single, and Eliza Jacobellis, running in Holm’s place, stole second. Alyssa Ishibashi followed with a sac-fly to right, scoring Allbritten, and putting State up 3-0.
McKenzie hit Linzi Bereitschaft and walked Alexa Datko to begin the bottom of the third, and both free passes would turn out to be costly. Bereitschaft then stole third, and when Allbritten’s throw from behind the plate sailed into left, two runs scored, shrinking the Pack’s lead to 3-2.
State nearly manufactured another run in the top of the fifth. Davis beat out an infield single, stole second, and took to third when Holm lined a base hit off of Mesko’s leg in the circle. But Kristine Bechtoldt fouled out to the catcher and the opportunity went unfulfilled.
The Cougars threatened to add another scratch in the bottom of the sixth, with runners on first and second and two outs, but McKenzie dismissed Datko on strikes.
The Pack added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh to make things a bit more comfortable. Allbritten lined a single into center, moved to second on a passed ball, and later scored when an Ishibashi fly to right field was dropped. Mackenzie Mangum followed by absolutely crushing a pinch-hit double to dead center that nearly escaped the fence, bringing in Ishibashi from first.
State will wrap up its stay at the College of Charleston’s Cougar Classic tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 24. The Pack will take Liberty at 2 p.m., before facing Kennesaw State at 4 p.m.
