Shanna Smith Named ACC Softball Player of the Week

RALEIGH, N.C. NC State senior shortstop Shanna Smith was named ACC Player of the Week on Monday, Feb. 11, following a sensational season-opening weekend at the UCF Softball Tournament in Orlando, Fla. Smith helped carry the Pack to a 3-2 slate to begin the 2008 season.
On Friday against host Central Florida, the Albemarle, N.C., native tied a school record with five hits, including two home runs, as State set a school record for hits in a game with 18. In the 10-6 win, she scored three runs, contributed five RBIs and stole her first base of the season. In two games against Central Arkansas on Saturday and Sunday, Smith was again outstanding, combining for three more hits, three runs and two RBIs in two Wolfpack wins. She totaled nine runs, nine hits, including two doubles, a triple and two home runs, along with seven RBIs, two stolen bases and four walks over the weekend.
State resumes play later this week at the FAU “Strike-Out” Cancer Tournament in Boca Raton, Fla., Friday, Feb. 15 through Sunday, Feb. 17. The Pack will take on Kent State, host Florida Atlantic, Long Island, Miami (Ohio) and at least one other game.
