No. 27 Gymnastics Takes 2nd at Governor's Cup

Towson, Md. - Solid performances from freshman Brittney Hardiman and sophomore Taylor Seaman helped the No. 27 NC State gymnastics team to a second place finish at the Governor's Cup in Towson, Md. on Friday, Feb. 1. A team meet score of 192.750 put the Wolfpack just behind No. 21 North Carolina who scored a 194.000. Maryland placed third with 191.825 and Towson rounded out the quad with a 191.675. The win over Maryland gave the Pack its first EAGL conference win of the season, and the Pack moves to 4-1 (1-0 EAGL) this season.
The Governor's Cup is also an event that has the states of North Carolina and Maryland compete against each other. A combined score of 386.750 by UNC and NC State gave North Carolina the edge over the state of Maryland for the eighth time in the event's 13th year. Maryland and Towson scored a combined 383.500.
With a score of 9.825 on vault, Hardiman was in a three-way tie for second in the event. Seaman took fifth with a 9.800, and junior Ashley Shepard and senior Leigha Hancock rounded out the top-ten both scoring a 9.675.
When the Pack proceeded to the uneven parallel bars, Seaman posted a 9.800 and took the event's overall top spot. Senior Kelsey Lee tied for fourth with a 9.750, and senior Heather Zolton tied for 10th with a 9.700.
Hardiman led the Pack on balance beam and she tied for 7th with a 9.575.
In the final event, Lee tied her personal best on floor with a 9.850, and tied for second in the event. Hardiman and Seaman also contributed to the Pack's overall floor score with tying scores of 9.775 for 10th place. Shepard posted a 9.750, and Hancock scored a 9.700 to contribute to NC State's total of 48.850 in the event.
Hardiman's hard work during the meet paid off and she took fourth in the all-around with a 38.850. Seaman's bar performance helped her to sixth in the all-around with a 38.550. Lee and Zolton also competed in the all-around with scores of 38.300 and 37.850 respectively.
The Pack returns to Raleigh as the team hosts its first home meet of the season. The competition will include No. 16 Auburn, George Washington, and Texas Woman's University. The meet will take place on Sunday, Feb. 3 at 1 p.m. and can also be viewed on ACCSelect.com.
