As the season quickly approaches, the team is certainly coming together. We had a very successful first intersquad this past week. With almost half the team being freshmen, it wasn’t positive how our first meet situation would turn out. Without question, everyone did an excellent job. We have a brand new line up on every event, so it was important for the upperclassmen to give the underclassmen the encouragement and support they needed to get the job done. Every gymnast played their part.
We have an extremely talented team this year. The freshmen came in with a strong competitive background and we can see that in the gym. Freshmen Jessica Panza will anchor us on beam and Brooke Barr on vault. Both girls have earned this spot, and hit solid routines at the intersquad. Becca Teich, Jackie Yanchocik, Alex Williams, and Anna Kronenfeld also proved to be consistent competitors. Such a young team leaves us with a lot of room to improve throughout the year. The skills and the difficulty are there, we just need the self-confidence.
Sophomore Megan Rowell has come back from a knee injury and will really help the team on vault, beam and floor this year. Brittany Vontz is doing a fabulous job this year, training all four events. Brittney Hardiman has come back more powerful than ever. She again is competing in the all-around and is upgrading a lot of her routines.
Junior Lauren Deuser will be greatly missed in the bars and beam line up. She is overcoming a torn achilles. Once she was off the crutches, she immediately was in the gym and the weight room and is already swinging bars again. Her determination and ambition is something to be admired.
Seniors Ashley Shepard, Dru Davis and Elyse Adams are all making a huge impact on the team specializing in their events. They are great leaders and are always giving the underclassmen the motivation they need to succeed.
All the girls bring something special to the team other than their talents. We work really well together and are always pushing each other to become better in the gym and in the classroom. Immediately we all bonded and became best friends. I’m honored to be part of this team and excited to compete with these girls.
