NC State has accepted an invitation to play in the third annual Papajohns.com Bowl against Big East opponent Rutgers (7-5 overall, 5-2 in Big East). The game will be played at Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama, on December 29 at 2 pm (central) and will be broadcast by ESPN.
The game will mark the Wolfpack’s 24th bowl appearance and the team has posted an all-time mark of 12-10-1 in bowl competition. Although the Papajohns.com Bowl is only in its third year, NC State did play in a bowl game at Legion Field in 1990, defeating Brett Favre’s Southern Miss squad, 31-27, in the All-American Bowl.
“We are honored to have been invited to compete in the Papajohns.com Bowl and feel that it is an excellent way to end an exciting season for NC State,” said Wolfpack head coach Tom O’Brien, whose has led nine of his last 10 teams to bowl invitations. “Our football team has worked extremely hard to earn a chance to play in this game. Rutgers is a great opponent and we are very happy that Birmingham is our destination because it will give the Wolfpack nation an opportunity to travel to see us play. Our fans’ support for the bowl game will be just as important to our team’s success as it has been all year long.”
Although 13 one-time starters missed a combined total of 44 games in 2008, the Wolfpack still worked its way to bowl eligibility. Finishing the season at 6-6, NC State became the first team in ACC history to finish the season 4-0 in conference play after beginning at 0-4.
“After our exciting finish to the season, it was very important to us to go to a bowl that would be feasible for our fans to attend,” said Director of Athletics Lee Fowler. “Our fans have such a great tradition of turning bowl games into a home field advantage for our team and we look forward to seeing a huge crowd of Wolfpackers in Birmingham.”
